STORRS, Conn. - Boston College earned a two-game sweep of BIG EAST rival Connecticut with 3-1 and 1-0 victories at the UConn Softball Field on Sunday. The Eagles capitalized on poor fielding by the Huskies and the power of second baseman Jen Asbury, who belted a double and a home run on the day.
In the first game, BC jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning. Asbury, who reaching on an error and eventually reached third on another error, came home on an RBI fielder's choice by Elyse Meredith. The Eagles added two more runs in the second as Lisa Field's single to left field plated Erin Mackey, who had doubled to open the frame. Starting pitcher Kim Ryan then scored when the Huskies misplayed a Jacqui Goodchild hit.
UConn posted its lone run in the fourth when Maggie Arbogast singled in Jessica Bigos. Earlier in the inning, the Eagles preserved their three-run advantage when Meredith connected with Field to gun out Ashleigh Campen at the plate.
Ryan went 5.1 innings and collected her eighth win of the season. She allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts. Tekae Malandris went the final 1.2 innings with no hits and four strikeouts. Barb Cook threw a complete-game five hitter for the Huskies.
In the nightcap, Asbury's home run in the fourth inning was all Malandris needed to complete her sixth shutout of the season. She allowed two hits while striking out 10 in the full 7.0 innings.
Asbury's homer, her fifth of the season, sailed over the left center field fence and propelled the Eagles to the 1-0 victory.
Malandris sat down 11 straight batters between the second and sixth inning before a Huskie reached first on an error.
UConn's Claire Hesson also pitched a complete game, allowing three hits - Asbury's home run as well as a double by Erin Mackey and a single by Lisa Fischer - and struck out three.
With the sweep, BC improved to 20-22 and 9-5 in BIG EAST games. UConn fell to 10-29 overall and 3-13 in BIG EAST play.
Boston College will next face Holy Cross in a home doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24 beginning at 3 p.m. on Shea Field. The following day, the Eagles host Harvard for one at 3 p.m., before facing Notre Dame for a BIG EAST doubleheader on Saturday, April 27 at Shea.
