CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team (21-13, 10-4 BIG EAST) picked up its sixth-consecutive victory, as it defeated cross-town rival Harvard (8-18), 12-3, Tuesday afternoon O'Donnell Field. The Eagles' six-game winning streak is the longest since last season when they won nine-consecutive games.
All 12 of Boston College's runs came in the first seven innings of the contest. The story of the game for the Eagles was the return of pitcher Paul Knapic, who was playing in his first game in a year and a half following Tommy John surgery.
Despite not earning the decision for the Eagles, Knapic pitched three complete innings giving up four hits, two runs (one earned), zero walks and struck out two Crimson batters. Freshman pitcher Joe Martinez (1-0) came into the game and gave head coach Pete Hughes five solid innings. He gave up three hits, zero runs, walked one and also struck out two Harvard batters in picking up the win.
From a hitting standpoint, Boston College belted out 13 hits on the afternoon, which included four home runs. Center fielder Drew Locke, catcher Jeff Mackor, left fielder Brian Durkin and second baseman Josh DiScipio all recorded home runs for the Eagles.
Locke, right fielder Brian Macchi, short stop Ryan Morgan, third baseman Jason Delaney, who had two doubles on the afternoon, and designated hitter Zach Keenan all recorded two hits apiece. Locke, who finished the game 2-for-4, recorded three RBI, while Morgan, Macchi and Durkin each chipped in with two RBI.
Harvard starting pitcher Rob Wheeler (0-1) picked up the loss from the Crimson. Wheeler only lasted three innings, as he gave up five hits, five runs (four earned), walked two and struck out three BC batters.
The baseball team is back in action Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21, in a critical BIG EAST series against Villanova in Philadelphia and Villanova, Pa. The doubleheader on Saturday, which is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m., will be played at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. The final game of the series is at 12 p.m. on Sunday, but the contest will be played at Richie Ashburn Field.
