BOSTON - The Boston College baseball team (20-13, 10-4 BIG EAST) picked up its 20th victory of the 2002 season on Tuesday afternoon as it defeated in-state rival UMass-Amherst (12-17, 4-8 Atlantic 10) in the first round of the Beanpot tournament, 7-5, at historic Fenway Park.
The Eagles now advance to the championship on Tuesday, April 23, when they take on cross-town rival Northeastern University at 2 p.m. at Fenway Park.
UMass got the scoring going in the first inning when designated hitter Chris Morgan knocked a single to center field off of Boston College starting pitcher James Dawson.
With the Eagles down 1-0 heading into their half of the first, short stop Ryan Morgan got things going by roping a double to left center. Following a ground out by center fielder Drew Locke to UMass second baseman Aaron Senez, which advanced Morgan to third, and a strikeout by right fielder Brian Macchi, things got exciting for the Eagles. First baseman Vinny Scavone stepped up to the plate and crushed a home run off of Minutemen pitcher Brandon White over the historic Green Monster in left field.
The Minutemen knotted the score up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, when Sanez and left fielder Derrick Durepo executed a perfect hit-and-run. Sanez's double to right field allowed Durepo to score from first base.
Boston College regained the lead in the third inning when Morgan hit his second double of the game off the left field wall, which allowed second baseman Josh DiScipio to score from second. The Eagles tacked on another run in the fourth, when designated hitter Zach Keenan hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring catcher Jeff Mackor.
The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning when third baseman Jason Delaney drilled a double down the right field line, which scored Macchi from second. Delaney then scored following a single by Keenan. The final run of the game for BC came in the seventh inning when DiScipio scored off an error from the third baseman.
DiScipio and Morgan were the only two players to record two hits apiece. DiScipio finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate and scored two runs, while Morgan went 2-for-4 (both doubles) with one run and one RBI.
Dawson (1-0) had a solid pitching outing for head coach Pete Hughes' squad. He went seven complete innings giving up 10 hits, three runs (all earned), zero walks and struck out four UMass batters. Sophomore Mike Gauthier earned his second save of the season, as he closed out the ninth inning for Boston College. Gauthier gave up two hits, one run, walked one and struck out three batters.
Minutemen starting pitcher Brandon White (1-2) went six complete innings giving up nine hits, six runs (four earned), one walk and struck out two Boston College batters. Durepo led UMass from the plate, as he went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
The Eagles are back in action at 3 p.m. Wednesday when they take on cross-town rival Harvard at O'Donnell Field in Cambridge, Mass. In last year's meeting, the Crimson defeated the Eagles, 6-1, at Shea Field.
