CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Prior to Friday's doubleheader with West Virginia, the Boston College baseball team set out with one goal in mind - keep pace with the BIG EAST Conference leaders. Following their two wins over West Virginia, all that was left for the Eagles was to sweep the visiting Georgetown Hoyas, and that is what they did. Boston College (19-13, 10-4 BIG EAST) swept Georgetown (7-34, 2-15 BIG EAST), 4-3 and 9-2. More importantly for the Eagles, the four wins this weekend help them maintain sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST.
Pitcher Mark Sullivan and left fielder Drew Locke were the heroes for the Eagles in game one. Sullivan, who struggled on Friday afternoon in relief work against West Virginia, came back with vengeance on Sunday afternoon against the Hoyas.
Sullivan (7-2) picked up his team leading seventh win of the season, as he threw a complete game (seven innings). He allowed seven hits, three runs (all earned), two walks and struck out a season high 11 batters.
Locke finished the opening game on Sunday 3-for-3 from the plate. He was the only player on the Eagles' roster to record more than one hit in the first game. Two of his three hits were doubles, which gave six through the first three games of the weekend (four against West Virginia). Locke finished the weekend going 10-for-17 (.588 avg.) from the plate, which included six doubles.
Boston College jumped out to a 2-0 lead through three innings, but in the top of the fourth inning Georgetown catcher Michael Lombardi crushed a two-run home run to left center to knot the game up at 2-2. The Hoyas took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth when left fielder Ron Cano scored off of a center fielder Carlos Gazitua's groundout.
The Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when catcher Jeff Mackor singled to center field scoring right fielder Brain Macchi. Designated hitter Eric Wright drove in the next run when he hit into a fielders choice, which allowed Mackor to score.
From a hitting standpoint for Georgetown, third baseman James Supple went 3-for-4 from the plate. Gazitua chipped in with two hits, one run and one RBI. Georgetown pitcher Eric Sutton pitched a complete game for the Hoyas, as he allowed 10 hits, four runs (all earned), one walk and struck out six BC batters.
Freshman Kevin Shepard began game two for Boston College by retiring the first 14 Georgetown batters he faced, Hoyas' right fielder Bill Quinn hit a single in the fifth inning to end the streak. Shepard (3-1) picked up his third collegiate victory, as he went eight complete innings giving up six hits, two runs (both earned), one walk and struck out six batters.
The Eagles' first run of the contest came in the bottom of the short stop Ryan Morgan scored off of a pass ball when Georgetown catcher James Supple was not able to handle a pitch by Kevin Galvin. Following Morgan's run, Brian Macchi hit a two-run double to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
The Hoyas made the game interesting as in the fifth inning, they scored two runs to cut the Boston College lead to 3-2. Quinn had a solid game two for the Hoyas, as he registered one of the two RBI, and he went 3-for-4 from the plate. First baseman Mike McLeod accounted for the other run.
With the score only 3-2, Boston College opened the floodgates in the seventh and eighth innings as it posted six runs. The biggest blast of all came off the bat of first baseman Vinny Scavone, who nailed a three-run home run in the seventh inning to give the Eagles a convincing 7-2 lead.
Center fielder Eric Wright, Macchi and Scavone all registered two hits apiece in the second game. Macchi and Scavone both had three RBI to go along with their hits.
Galvin (0-2) picked up the loss for Georgetown, as he went five complete innings giving up four hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and struck out only two BC batters.
The Eagles are back in action at 2 p.m. Tuesday, when they take on in-state rival Massachusetts in the first round of the 13th-annual Beanpot tournament at historic Fenway Park in Boston.
