Softball Earns Split With Seton Hall

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College split a BIG EAST doubleheader with Seton Hall on Saturday, losing the first game 2-1 before rebounding with a 6-0 victory in the second game. The split moved the Eagles to 16-19 overall (5-3 BIG EAST), while Seton Hall moved to 19-11 overall (6-4 BIG EAST). BC's pitchers combined for 22 strikouts on the day.
In the first game, Seton Hall took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Laura Taylor hit her 10th home run of the season to left center field. BC evened the scoring in the next frame when Michelle Daly's two-out single brought in Jacqui Goodchild, who had reached on a double down the left field line in the previous at-bat.
The score held until the top of the seventh when the Pirates scored the go-ahead run. Kim Jackson reached on a fielder's choice, then advanced to second on Taylor's single to left field. Amy Mellin then reached first on a fielding error at the base, allowing Jackson to come home from second.
BC tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the inning getting runners on first and second with one out, but was unable to bring either home.
SHU's Christina Shanko earned the win, going 6.1 innings and striking out six. She allowed one run on three hits. Megan Meyer earned the save. Tekae Malandris took the loss, pitching a complete game two-hitter while striking out 12. She gave up two runs, one earned.
In the nightcap, BC responded with a five-run fifth inning to go on to the 6-0 victory. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second to open the scoring. Lisa Fischer, who went 3-for-3 in the game, singled to left field, the moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Erin Mackey. Lisa Field brought Fischer in on a single to center field.
Two innings later, Cara Blumfield got the Eagles started by reaching on an error at first, and then moved over to second on a wild pitch. Fischer singled to right field, driving in Blumfield. Elyse Meredith then knocked a two-run home run over the left field fence to bring the score to 4-0. Field singled again and moved to second on a fielding error in left field, then was replaced on the basepath by Jenny Calabrese, who scored on a Sara Kellner double to left center. Goodchild closed the scoring when she doubled in Kellner on another hit to left center.
Six runs was enough for Kim Ryan, who pitched a complete game shutout for the Eagles. She struck out 10 and allowed two hits, both to Pirate lead-off hitter McKenzie Richards. Meyer started the game and went 3.2 innings before being replaced by Casey McDevitt who finished the game. Meyer allowed six runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out three.
In 2002 BC is 7-0 in the second game of doubleheaders, earning shutouts in six of those contests.
Boston College will face St. John's in the back half of a BIG EAST doubleheader weekend on Sunday, April 14 at Shea Field. The first game will go off at noon.
