LAS VEGAS - Cara Blumfield drilled a long two-run home run off the left-field scoreboard to lead the Eagles to a 5-0 victory over the UNLV on Saturday at Eller Media Stadium. The win snapped the team's eight-game losing streak.
The Eagles' (4-15) already led 1-0 following an unearned run in the fourth before Blumfield's long ball - her fifth of the season - put the game out of the Rebels' (11-15) reach.
For emphasis, Eagle pitcher Tekae Melandris added a solo shot of her own, her second career home run, in the sixth off Rebel reliever Kacey Ellis, and BC tacked on an unearned run in the final inning to cap its scoring.
UNLV's only offensive threat came in the bottom of the sixth when it collected three of its five hits on the night. However, a double play helped the Eagles quell any threat of scoring and preserved the shutout for Malandris (3-7).
Malandris pitched a complete game, eight strike out game. She also only walked on batter on the afternoon. Rebel starter Geney Orris (3-4) surrendered just four singles and the big home run, dropping her fourth decision of the year. Pauline Glenn pounded out three of the Rebels' five hits in a perfect 3-for-3 evening at the plate.
Earlier in the day, the Eagles fell to Oregon for the second time in two days, 3-1. Elyse Meredith drove in the Eagles' lone run, tripling in Erin Mackey who had walked to get on base.
Boston College returns to action Friday, March 15 when the team plays five games in the three-day Hoftstra Invitational in Hepstead, N.Y.
