Baseball Pounds Lehigh In Florida, 17-2

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - The Boston College baseball team (7-4) picked up its seventh win of the 2002 season on Friday afternoon as it defeated Lehigh University (4-5-1) for the second time over Spring Break, 17-2. BC's first win against Lehigh came back on Wednesday when it won 11-5, also in Homestead, Fla.
The Eagles received an incredible performance from the pitching staff, while also taking care of business from the plate. Senior Mark Sullivan and sophomore James Dawson combined to throw a four-hitter, while only giving up two runs. Sullivan pitched seven innings for the Eagles, while only giving up two runs on four hits while striking out seven Lehigh batters. Dawson came into the game in the eighth inning to close out the contest. He did not allow one hit or run in his two innings of work.
While Lehigh was only able to muster up a mere four hits, Boston College pounded out 19. Leading the charge was right fielder Brian Macchi, who went 4-for-5 from the plate, scored two runs, had a triple and four RBIs.
Left fielder Andrew Locke and third baseman Jason Delaney both had exceptional afternoons at the plate. Locke, who came in off the bench for head coach Pete Hughes' squad, went 3-for-3, had two doubles and scored three runs. Delaney his incredible freshman campaign as he went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. First baseman Vinny Scavone chipped in with two hits, one of which was a double, and two RBIs. On the afternoon, the Eagles pounded out nine doubles.
Boston College is back in action against Manhattan College at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Boston Red Sox minor league training facility in Ft. Myers, Fla.
