PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Boston College played its opening BIG EAST softball doubleheader of the year on Saturday, splitting with Providence. In the first game, PC defeated the Eagles, 1-0, as both teams were held to just one hit. In the nightcap, BC topped the Friars 2-0.
Cori Van Dusen's home run in the bottom of the first inning held as the Friar's lone in hit in the game, but was enough to lift the team over the Eagles. Cara Blumfield recorded BC's lone hit - a line drive down the third base line in the third inning.
The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Blumfield reached after being hit by a pitch and then both Jen Asbury and Lisa Fischer walked to load the bases. But with two outs and a 3-2 count, Erin Mackey unsuccessfully tried to check her swing on a high pitch and was called for the strikeout to end the rally.
Kim Ryan threw the complete game with seven strikeouts and one walk for BC. Nicole Bartholomew tossed the complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts, including the side in the seventh inning. She walked five in the game.
In the second game, Blumfield brought home Jacqui Goodchild and Michelle Daly with a two-out double to right center field. Goodchild reached on an infield hit to the shortstop then Daly reached on a error catching error by the first baseman.
Tekae Malandris threw her second complete game shutout in a row, collecting eight strikeouts. She walked one while allowing four hits in seven innings.
With the split, the Eagles moved to 11-16 on the season and 1-1 in the BIG EAST. The team will next play doubleheaders at Villanova and Rutgers on Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7, respectively.
