STORRS, Conn. - After a quick start to the 2002 BIG EAST season, which saw the Boston College baseball team sweep Rutgers, the Eagles (12-10, 3-2 BIG EAST) dropped a doubleheader to Connecticut (10-5, 5-0 BIG EAST) on Tuesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field, 8-3 and 7-4.
In both games, the Eagles were not able to get the bats going like they did against the Scarlet Knights this past weekend. On Thursday, the Huskies held the Eagles to mere 14 hits in the two nine-inning contests. Boston College entered today's games ranked second in the conference in hits with 229.
In game one, Boston College jumped out to an early 3-2 lead through two innings, however, the Eagles were not able to get any offense going following the second. The Huskies tallied three runs in their half of the third and fifth innings, which is all they would need in earning their fourth conference win of the season. Of their six hits, left fielder Neal McCarthy accounted for two, as he finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs. Also, of Boston College's three runs, only one was registered as an earned run. The Eagles lone RBI came off the bat of co-BIG EAST Player of the Week Vinny Scavone's bat.
Connecticut's Brett Burnham, who was co-BIG EAST Player of the Week with Scavone, and Peter Soteropoulos both registered two hits apiece for the Huskies. Boston College starting pitching Matt Elfeldt (0-1) picked up the loss, as he lasted only three innings. He allowed six hits, five runs (four earned) and struck out only one UConn batter.
In game two, the Eagles once again held a slim lead but were not able to hold on. Boston College led UConn, 4-3, through three innings, but the Huskies posted three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to seal the win.
BC head coach Pete Hughes' squad was held to only eight hits in game two. Left fielder Brian Durkin and third baseman Jason Delaney recorded two hits apiece, while starting pitcher and designated hitter Matt Lederhos recorded his fifth home run of the season. For Connecitcut, the heroes of game two were center fielder Cy Hess, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, and starting pitcher Pat Sperone, who pitched eight complete innings to pick up the win.
For Boston College, relief pitcher Matt O'Donnell (1-3) picked up the loss, as he gave up six hits, three runs (all earned) in three innings of work.
The baseball team is back in action at 12 p.m. Saturday for a doubleheader against BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh at Trees Field in Pittsburgh. The last time these two teams met was back on March 13 and 14, 2000 when the Panthers took two out of three games from the Eagles in Pittsburgh.
