Softball Shuts Out Fairfield, 5-0 and 4-0

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College pitchers Kim Ryan and Tekae Malandris each tossed complete-game shutouts as the Eagles swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Fairfield, 5-0 and 4-0, on Sunday at Shea Field. The pair of wins pushed the Eagles' winning streak to seven games, the team's longest since the 1999 season.
In the first game, the Eagles got on the board in the second inning. Lisa Field's single to left field brought in Lisa Fischer, who had reached on an infield hit. BC added two more runs in the third when Asbury roped a double down the right-filed line that plated Cara Blumfield and Michelle Daly. Erin Mackey increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. She singled to open the inning, the advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Field. After she moved to third on a wild pitch, Mackey scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Jen Asbury's solo shot to right center in the bottom of the sixth ended the scoring.
Ryan tossed 7.0 innings and struck out a season-high 10 batters for her third shutout in as many games. She allowed only four hits and walked only two. Melissa Santos threw six innings for Fairfield, striking out six and walking one. She gave up five runs - four earned - on nine hits.
In the second game, Malandris used a nine-strikeout performance to defeat the Stags. Fairfield had at least one base runner in each inning, including a runner on third in both the fifth and sixth inning, but Malandris came up with strikeouts each time she was in a jam.
After two and a half scoreless innings, BC got on the board in the third. Leah Kamataris reached on a throwing error on by pitcher Marissa Beemer and advanced to second. Jacqui Goodchild sacrificed her over to third before Daly brought her home with a sac fly.
The Eagles added another run in the fifth and two in the sixth. With two outs, Goodchild doubled to left center and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Daly doubled her in to stake the team to a 3-0 lead. In the next frame, Asbury opened the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Fischer sac bunt. Mackey doubled to right center to bring in Asbury. Mackey moved over to third on a wild pitch, then Kamataris singled to left to bring her in and make the score 4-0.
Malandris stuck out two Stags in the final inning to record the shutout.
With the sweep, the Eagles improved to 10-15 overall on the season, while Fairfield moved to 13-16.
BC will open its BIG EAST season on Saturday, March 30 with a doubleheader at Providence beginning at noon.
