HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Eagle pitchers Tekae Malandris and Kim Ryan held Hofstra to a combined seven hits and 15 strikeouts as Boston College swept a doubleheader from the Pride with 2-1 and 3-0 wins. The two teams were originally scheduled to play a three-way round robin as part of the 2002 Hofstra Invitational, but changed to a straight doubleheader when Boston University did not make the trip to Long Island due to early morning rain.
Malandris threw a four-hitter in the opening game with seven strikeouts as the Eagles captured a 2-1 victory. Michelle Daly opened the scoring for BC in the tope of the first inning with a solo home run to left field. The Eagles then added an insurance run in the third when Jacqui Goodchild doubled to left center. Daly followed with a single to center and Cara Blumfield followed with an RBI single to left.
Hofstra got within one in the bottom of the third, but the Pride managed only one more runner in scoring position for the rest of the game.
In the second games, Ryan tossed a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. Blumfield provided all the offense in the top of the first with a solo home run. The Eagles added an insurance run in the second when Leah Kamataris sacrificed in a run. Goodchild had an RBI groundout in the fourth that plated Jen Asbury, who had reached on a double.
With the pair of wins, BC has won three in a row and improved to 6-15 overall. Hofstra dipped to 6-13 on the season.
