Box Score for Wagner Game
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Boston College extended its winning streak to five games after defeating Hofstra, 6-0, and Wagner, 9-1, at the Hofstra Softball Invitational on Sunday. Cara Blumfield led the Eagles offensively, going a combined 5-for-7 on the day.
In the first game, Hofstra and the Eagles remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when BC exploded for six runs. Jacqui Goodchild led off the inning with a single then advanced to second on a error. After Michelle Daly singled to right, Blumfield stepped up and drove in Goodchild with a single down the left field line. Elyse Meredith doubled in Daly and Blumfield before Lisa Field's single brought in Meredith. Jen Asbury closed the scoring with a two-run homer, her second of the season.
Kim Ryan threw her second complete-game shutout of the weekend against the Pride. She struck out 5 batters, while allowing only five hits.
In the second game, Daly earned her first collegiate win on the mound as BC topped Wagner, 9-1, in five innings. Wagner posted a run in the top of the first, but the Eagles responded with three in the bottom half of the frame. Asbury doubled down the left field line and drove in Goodchild and Blumfield, then executed a double steal and stole home for the team's third run.
The Eagles added to the lead in the third when Blumfield - who went 3-for-3 in the game and missed only a home run to hit for the cycle - tripled in Daly. Meredith then drove in Blumfield before Lisa Fischer doubled in Meredith for the 6-1 lead. Blumfield's double in the fourth inning cleared the bases and brought in three runs for the final 9-1 win.
Daly pitched four innings, allowing four hits with four strikeouts. Every Eagle who started in the second game, except one, recorded at least one hit on the afternoon.
With the pair of wins, the Eagles moved to 8-15 on the season. The team will open its 2002 home schedule on Saturday with a BIG EAST doubleheader against Virginia Tech beginning at noon on Shea Field.
