Baseball Splits Pair With Delaware

NEWARK, Del. - Boston College (9-6) and the University of Delaware (6-9) baseball teams split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Eagles took game one in 10 innings, 9-8, by the Fightin' Blue Hens came back in the second contest to win, 4-1. Delaware qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2001 after winning the America East Conference championship.
In game one, freshman Marc Albano hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score catcher Jeff Mackor to give the Eagles a 9-8 lead. Freshman pitcher Chris Lambert sealed the deal for Boston College in Delaware's half of the 10th inning, as he got three Blue Hen batters to ground out, fly out and strike out.
Lambert had an incredible afternoon in relief, after coming in for senior Mark Sullivan in the sixth inning. Lambert picked up the win for Boston College after pitching 4.1 innings, giving up only one hit and one walk while striking out seven Delaware batters.
The Eagles and Fightin' Blue Hens fought back-and-forth throughout game one. Both teams battled to a 8-8 tie through six innings, but neither team was able to get on the board again until the ninth when Boston College scored the game-winning run.
Mackor had an incredible afternoon from the plate as he went 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and a two-run home run in the first inning. Left fielder Neal McCarthy, center fielder Matt Lederhos and Albano all had two hits apiece, as the Eagles' pounded out 12 hits in game one. Lederhos hit his third home run of the year in the third inning, when he knocked a solo shot to centerfield.
Sullivan, who entered the game with a 3-1 overall pitching record, had is most difficult outing of the year. He lasted on 5.2 innings giving up eight hits, eight earned runs, four walks and only struck out four Delaware batters.
Game two was the exact opposite of game one, as neither team was able to amount much of an offensive barrage, however, Delaware was able to post one run in four separate innings to defeat the Eagles. Boston College's only run of the game came when Lederhos hit his second home run of the day, fourth of the season, in the top of the fourth inning.
For the game, the Eagles had only five hits, two of which came off the bat of right fielder Brian Macchi. Macchi finished 2-for-4 in the second game. Freshman pitcher Kevin Shepard had a strong outing for the Eagles, as he went seven innings giving up three earned runs on six hits and striking out six Delaware batters. Delaware pitcher Jason Vincent threw a complete game, as he gave up only one earned run, five hits and struck out two Boston College batters.
The baseball team will conclude its weekend series with the Fightin' Blue Hens at 12 p.m. Sunday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
