BERKELEY, Calif. - This weekend's trip to take on the University of California-Berkeley is one the Boston College baseball team would like to forget quickly. The Golden Bear's completed the three-game sweep over the Eagles on Sunday at Evans Diamond, 16-0.
Boston College (3-3) was only able to muster up one hit against California, which finished with 15 hits. The Eagles lone hit came off the bat of first baseman Vinny Scavone, when he banged a single to right field in the third inning.
Head coach Pete Hughes went through five different pitchers during the nine-inning contest. Junior Matt Lederhos (0-1), who has been hot for the Eagles at the plate, lasted only two innings giving up six runs on five hits. Freshman pitcher Kevin Shepard only lasted 1.1 innings, as he allowed seven earned runs on six hits.
California shortstop Jeff Dragicevich led the Golden Bear's, as he went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. Pitcher Brent Hale picked up the win for California, as he went six innings giving up one hit and striking out three Boston College batters.
Boston College returns to action at 7:05 p.m. Friday, March 1, when it takes on Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox in an exhibition game in Fort Myers, Fla. The next regular-season game for the Eagles is Sunday, March 3, against Florida International in Homestead, Fla.
