BERKELEY, Calif. - The Boston College baseball team (3-2) dropped its second-consecutive game, after starting the season 3-0, to the University of California-Berkeley (7-6) Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond, 7-4.
Just like game one, California had its bats working on all cylinders. The Golden Bear's pounded out 14 hits compared to the Eagles' 12, but were able to do more with their hits. Cal jumped out to 5-0 lead through five innings and left it to its bullpen to close out the game.
California pitcher Brian Montalbo (1-2) pitched six scoreless innings, giving up only five hits while striking out five Boston College batters. Boston College pitcher Mark Sullivan (1-1), who had an impressive outing in his first start of the season, pitched six innings giving up five runs on 12 hits and struck out four Golden Bear batters.
Of Boston College's 12 hits, three of them came off the bat of catcher Jeff Mackor, who finished the day 3-for-3 and two runs. Center fielder Matt Lederhos, second baseman Josh DiScipio and first baseman Vinny Scavone each pounded out two hits a piece for the Eagles, while Lederhos and DiScipio also drove in one run each.
With the Eagles down 7-2 heading into the top of the ninth inning, pinch hitter Eric Wright hit his second home run of the season, which was a two-run shot, to cut the lead to 7-4. Trailing by three runs was the closest Boston College would get.
The Eagles and the Golden Bear's will wrap up the three-game series, at 4 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) Sunday at Evans Diamond.
