Baseball Falls To Cal In Game One, 10-4

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Boston College baseball team (3-1) lost its first game of the 2002 season on Friday afternoon to the University of California-Berkeley at Evans Diamond, 10-4. Sophomore pitcher Matt O'Donnell (0-1) picked up the loss for the Eagles, while California All-American pitcher Trevor Hutchinson (3-1) threw a complete game for the Golden Bear's.
California pounded out 17 hits compared to Boston College's 10 and also had seven stolen bases. Senior right fielder Brian Macchi continued his torrid pace in 2002, as he went 1-for-4 on the afternoon with only hit being a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. Macchi's home run came after trailing 8-2 heading into the top of the fifth.
Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Matt Lederhos, who is Boston College's leadoff hitter, and freshman third baseman Jason Delaney both had two hits a piece for head coach Pete Hughes' squad. Senior designated hitter Brian Durkin picked up his first hit and RBI of the 2002 season in the first inning.
For California, Hutchinson pitched all nine innings giving up four runs, all of which were earned, on 10 hits and he struck out five Eagles' batters. Cal first baseman Conor Jackson and left fielder Ben Conley both had incredible afternoon's from the plate. Both players went 4-for-5 from the plate and each one drove in one run.
For the Eagles, O'Donnell only lasted 3.2 innings as he gave up eight runs, all of which were earned, on 11 hits and struck out one California batter.
The Eagles and the Golden Bear's will tangle in game two, of the three-game series, at 4 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) Saturday at Evans Diamond.
