DAVIDSON, N.C. - After allowing Davidson College (1-4) to score five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game up at 13-13, the Boston College (3-0) baseball team tallied four runs in the top of tenth to go on to a 17-13 win and remain undefeated in 2002.
The Eagles concluded the three-game weekend series with Delaware State and Davidson tallying 40 runs and 42 hits. Freshman Chris Lambert (1-0) picked up the win for Boston College, as he pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four batters and giving up no hits.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Boston College bounced back with two runs of its own in the second inning. Right fielder Brian Macchi scored the Eagles' first run of the game when catcher Jeff Mackor hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Macchi to score from third base. Second baseman Ryan Morgan, who finished the afternoon 4-for-5 from the plate with three RBIs and four runs, scored the second run when third baseman Jason Delaney hit a single to third base, but Davidson third baseman Michael Muniz committed a throwing error which allowed Morgan to score.
The fourth inning was the most productive for the Eagles, as they scored five runs. Morgan started things off by recording his second RBI of the game when he hit a single through the left side. His single allowed first baseman Vinny Scavone to score all the way from second. Scavone had another solid game for the Eagles, as he finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs. Delaney, designated hitter Matt Lederhos and shortstop Marc Albano tallied the other three RBIs for the Eagles in the fourth.
The Bobcats scored four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to cut the Boston College lead to 7-6. The Eagles outscored the Bobcats 6-2 through their half of the eighth inning to take a convincing 13-8 lead into Davidson's bottom half of the inning.
Davidson scored five runs, on four hits while Boston College had three fielding errors, to knot the score at 13-13. Neither team was able to score in the ninth inning, which pushed the game into extra innings. In the top of the 10th inning, the Eagles put four runs on the board.
Macchi got things going by doubling to left field, which allowed center fielder Neal McCarthy to score. Scavone then stepped up to the plate and drove in Macchi off a double to center field. Morgan put two more runs on the board for the Eagles, as he roped a double to left field allowing Jeff Mackor and Scavone to score. With Boston College leading 17-13 heading into Davidson's half of the 10th, Lambert shut down the Bobcats with two strikeouts and one pop-up.
The Eagles are back in action Friday through Sunday, February 22-24, against the University of California-Berkeley in Berkeley, Calif. Game one, on Friday, will begin at 2 p.m., while game two (Saturday) and game three (Sunday) will be at 1 p.m.
