CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - After an emotional senior night ceremony where Head Coach Jackie Hadel bid farewell to her first-ever recruiting class, Kim Carlson, Rachel Bach and Lauren Schwer, the Eagles (14-17, 3-9 BIG EAST) upended the University of Connecticut (13-14, 8-4 BIG EAST) in a tense five-game match.
In game one, the Eagles saw Connecticut jump out to a 5-0 lead, but the season's largest home crowd encouraged the home team to knot the score at 16. The Eagles battled for a few more points, but UConn captured the win, 30-22.
The second game was tight throughout with Carlson, the team captain, playing strong for the Eagles. As Boston College gained a 24-21 advantage, their confidence increased. With match point on the line and the crowd on its feet, the Eagles nailed the ball home for the 30-27 victory.
After the intermission the Eagles returned to the court flying high and soared to a ten-point lead at the 22-12 mark. UConn cut its deficit in half, giving BC a scare. After a much-needed time out, sophomores Liz Aron and Katie Andersen drove a few key hits to secure the game 30-23.
Sloppier play led the Eagles to suffer a difficult blow in game four. Despite winning a rally that changed sides 15 times, Boston College could not pull out the victory. UConn dominated to the tune of 30-15.
Boston College rallied behind its seniors in an intense fifth game. With tremendous emotion as a catalyst, the teams traded points to 11. Boston College squeezed out the tie-breaking victory, 15-13.
For Boston College, the win marks just the third against BIG EAST Conference opponents. The Huskies, contending for a spot in the conference tournament, fell to 8-4 with the upset.
The Eagles will return to Power Gym to play the final home match of the season on Sunday, Nov. 17 against St. John's University at 2 p.m.
