Cross-Country Teams Place Fifth At BIG EAST Championships

BOSTON - Boston College placed fifth in both the men's and women's competitions at the 2002 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park. Sophomore Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill.) was the Eagles' top finisher in the women's race, completing the 6000-meter course in seventh place in a time of 20:42. Senior Shawn Wallace (Wakefield, Mass.) paced the men's effort, finishing the 8000-meter race in 12th place in a time of 24:12.
Wallace's 12th-place finish marks the highest finish by a Boston College male at the BIG EAST Championships since Chris Georgules placed sixth at the 1995 meet in Van Cortlandt Park (Bronx, N.Y.).
Villanova captured the men's team title. The Wildcats, led by second and third-place finishes from its top two runners, finished with 39 points. Providence, led by the first-place finish of its senior Adam Sutton (23:33), placed second with 49 points. Georgetown was third (55), while Notre Dame placed fourth (132). Boston College totaled 168.
In the women's competition, Notre Dame edged Georgetown for the team title. The Irish, who had the race's top two finishers, totaled 69 points. The Hoyas, whose top finisher placed ninth, used a balanced attack to finish with 70 points. Villanova was third with 88 points, followed closely by Providence with 89 points. Boston College totaled 105 points.
Joining Wallace among the men's team scorers were two sophomores, one senior and one freshman. Sophomore Drew Bouchard finished 27th (25:03); senior Matthew Kootman placed 34th (25:13); sophomore Adrian Anderson was 46th (25:48); and freshman Joe Lesniak finished 49th (25:54).
Following closely behind Cicero on the women's side was senior teammate Julie Spolidoro, who finished 10th in a time of 20:53. Juniors Jennifer Donovan and Jennifer Kramer placed 22nd (21:30) and 25th (21:40) respectively. Freshman Laurel Burdick rounded out the list of BC scorers, placing 41st in a time of 22:19.
