GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Boston College women's ice hockey team captured its first win of the 2002-03 season with a 5-2 win over the University of North Dakota. With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-1-0 on the season, while the Fighting Sioux fall to 0-1-1. The Saturday afternoon game marked the first ever Division I home women's ice hockey game for host UND.
The Fighting Sioux hit the net first, when Stasia Bakhit (Mikaela Tofte) beat BC goaltender Lisa Davis just 0:24 into the game. Boston College did not hesitate to strike back, however, and won the first period by scoring two goals within a 1:10. Senior assistant captain Jaclyn Kryzak (assisted by Lindsey Bazzone) picked up the first Eagle goal at 4:03, while sophomore Heidi Seidewand (Jessica Tychsen) struck just after.
Boston College opened the second period scoring when Kerri Sanders notched what proved to be the game-winner, beating UND netminder Amber Hasbargen off a pass from Alaina Clark. Clark scored herself to add insurance, assisted by Sanders and Thia Connolly.
Sanders was not finished for the day, however, and collected her second goal of the game three minutes into the third period. Clark added the assist on the second goal as well. North Dakota tried to come back, as Aynsley Allen (Sarah McCann) scored to take the score to 5-2 but the Eagle defense preserved the lead.
After today's abundant scoring by the Boston College first line, Sanders and Clark lead their team with four points each on the season.
Boston College sophomore goalie Davis made 21 saves in net for the Eagles, while Hasbargen stopped 30 for the home team.
The Eagles and Fighting Sioux meet again, tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 27 at Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. The puck drops at 2:05 p.m.
