CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College volleyball team suffered its first loss in five matches at the hands of Rutgers University Friday night in Power Gymnasium. With the loss, the Eagles fall to an even 12-12, with a BIG EAST record of 2-4. The Scarlet Knights improve to 13-8, (2-4 BE) on the season.
The Eagles stormed out of the blocks for the first game, playing with high-energy intensity and an unrelenting enthusiasm to take a 6-0 lead they would never relinquish. Katie Andersen and Rachel Bach's strong kills drove Boston College to the 30-19 victory.
The second game was more even-handed, but at the same time, much more passionate. The Eagles were on top, 27-23, but the Scarlet Knights fought back to tie the game at 28, and finish off the home team, 28-20.
In a dramatic third game, BC saw itself with a slight deficit through the midpoint, but managed to tie it at 21. Boston College was first to the 29-point mark but Rutgers captured the victory, 31-29.
The fourth game was won at the net. The Scarlet Knights dominated above the tape, and the Eagles had a hard time hitting past the visiting blockers. The Eagles were defeated 30-15.
Rutgers had a team total 20 blocks for the match, holding the Eagles to a mere .109 hitting percentage. Rutgers also hit poorly as a squad, with a .172 percentage, though Lauren Venarchik hit for .455. Lauren Schwer led the Eagle defense with 17 digs.
The Eagles return to action against the Seton Hall Pirates on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. in Power Gymnasium for another BIG EAST match.
