SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior Casey Schmidt (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) scored the game-winner in the 42nd minute and junior Adam Pfeifer (Newton North/Newton, Mass.), playing just his third game back after missing a month because of mononucleosis, added an insurance goal as the No. 14 Boston College men's soccer team downed Syracuse, 3-1, Wednesday, Oct. 23 at SU Soccer Stadium.
The win improves the Eagles' overall record to 9-3-0 and their BIG EAST mark to 6-2-0. They now are in second place in the BIG EAST with 18 points, one less than St. John's. The Orangemen drop to 7-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the conference.
Schmidt received a through ball on the right side from junior Neil Krause (Assumption College/Holliston, Mass.) and put it past Orangemen goalkeeper Alim Karim at 41:18 to break the 1-1 tie. It is Schmidt's team-leading seventh goal of the season and 31st of his career, tying him with three other players for the most in school history. The assist was Krause's fourth on the year.
Later in the period, senior Bobby Thompson (Framingham/Framingham, Mass.) found Pfeifer unmarked in the box, and Pfeifer put it home at 75:00 for his first goal of the season.
Thompson also assisted on the Eagles' first goal of the match, which came at 8:21. He put a shot on net that was saved by Karim, but freshman John Krause (Rivers/Holliston, Mass.) cleaned up the rebound. It is the first goal of Krause's career.
The two assists by Thompson give him a team-leading seven on the season and 17 for his career, moving him into a sixth-place tie with Justin Ceccarelli on Boston College's all-time list. They are also his 40th and 41st career points, moving him into sole possession of eighth place in that category.
Syracuse's goal was scored at 16:12 by Kirk Johnson, and was assisted on by Guido Cristofori and Jorge Rodriguez.
Fifth-year keeper Kyle Singer (Univ. of Virginia/Plymouth, Minn.) tied his season high with nine saves.
The Maroon and Gold hosts Penn State (9-7) on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Newton Campus Soccer Field. The match is slated for 2 p.m.
