CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Junior Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) slammed his 10th home run in BC's 6-1 loss to Harvard Wednesday April 18 at Chestnut Hill. The decision dropped BC to 18-17-0 overall, while Harvard improved to 13-19-0.
Macchi's 15th career dinger gave him sole possession of sixth place on BC's all-time home run list. The junior is two shy of fifth-place Joe Hayward, who graduated in 1993 with 17 home runs to his credit. Macchi also needs one more home run to tie former teammate Eric Olson for third in the single season category (11).
BC bats were quiet through most of the game. Joe Kealty, Josh DiScipio, Jarett Mendoza and Brian Macchi. combined for four hits through 9.0 innings. Defensively, Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) threw out three candidates for stolen bases. He now has caught 24 of 60 would-be basestealers.
Harvard scored once in each of the first three innings then furthered the deficit with RBI singles from Brian Lentz and Mark Mager in the sixth. Bryan Hale welcomed BC relief pitcher James Dawson into the game with his solo home run. It was the second dinger on the day for Harvard as Brian Lentz also went long earlier in the game.
Matthew Duffey suffered the loss for BC, despite retiring a career-high six batters on strikeouts. The sophomore right-hander allowed nine hits for five earned runs in 6.0 innings of work. The Crimson starter, Ben Crockett, gave up one hit in three shutout innings. Chaney Sheffield earned the save in his 4.0 innings of work.
