CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Senior left fielder Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.) hit three doubles to drive in three of Boston College's four runs in a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth Tuesday, April 17 in Chestnut Hill. The win improved BC to 18-16 overall while dropping the Big Green to 11-13.
Kealty has doubled in three of his last four BC games to give him a team-high total of 13 two-baggers on the season.
Matt Lederhos (Westwood, Mass.) earned his third victory on the mound for the Eagles (3-2). The sophomore right-hander gave up three hits in 5.0 innings of work with five strikeouts. After surrendering one unearned run in the second inning on two hits, Lederhos allowed only one more hit in the next 3.0 innings and no runners beyond first base. The BC pitching staff of Lederhos, Erik Olson and Matt Elfeldt held two of the country's leading batters: Michael Levy (.451) and Scott Shirrell (.422) to one hit in a combined seven trips to the plate.
Dartmouth outfielder Josh Cushman singled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on teammate Eddie Lucas' single for a 1-0 visitor lead in the second inning. BC responded in the third when Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) led off with a single and moved up on Scott Lemone's walk. Josh DiScipio's (Schenectady, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt placed runners at second and third only to be driven home on Joe Kealty's second double of the day.
The Big Green threatened in the seventh inning but fine Eagle defense prevented the tying tally. Lucas hit into a fielder's choice double play as shortstop Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.) threw home to get Jason Dacosta out at the plate then catcher Jeff Mackor threw to DiScipio at second to prevent Lucas from taking the extra base. In BC's next opportunity, the Eagles wasted two outs before Josh DiScipio reached first on a single, then stole second and stole third. He scored on Kealty's double down the right field line. Hubbard drove in Kealty for the final BC run.
Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.) got himself out of a jam in the ninth for his third save of the season. He placed runners at first and second with one out before catching Cushman looking and getting Andrew Cronin to hit into a 6-4 fielder's choice play to end the game.
Kevan Graves took the loss for Dartmouth.
BC hosts Harvard Wednesday, April 18. Game time is 3 p.m.
