CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Boston College fell to host Virginia Tech for the third time in two days, losing a 13-5 decision Monday, March 19. The loss dropped the Eagles to 9-8-0 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Hokie pitcher Ian Ostlund allowed nine BC hits and four runs in 8.0 innings on the way to his fourth victory of the season. Matt Lederhos (Westwood, Mass.) suffered the loss, surrendering six runs on five hits in 4.0 innings.
The score was even at three after three innings until VT tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth to take the 5-3 edge. The hosts increased their lead by sending 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring six runs on four hits while taking advantage of four walks. Erik Olson (Reading, Mass.) pitched one-third of an inning for BC and gave up five runs before Mark Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) took over in that frame.
Chris Rosado's (Stamford, Conn.) sacrifice fly and Brian Durkin's (Lowell, Mass.) run-scoring double propelled BC to a 2-0 edge in the first inning. The Eagles would add another tally in the second on Mike Hubbard's (Braintree, Mass.) double but were shutdown until the eighth inning when Brian Durkin produced his second RBI of the day. Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.), who was 3-of-5, drove in BC's final run in the ninth inning. Both Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) and Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass./St. John's Prep) contributed a pair of hits.
The Eagles play University of Rhode Island Wednesday, March 21. Location to be determined.
