Chestnut Hill, Mass. - - Andy Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) threw a complete-game one-hitter to lead Boston College to a 3-0 shutout of Northeastern in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday in Chestnut Hill. The visitors edged BC 5-4 in the nightcap of Senior Day as Brendan Ryan recorded his first victory on the mound. The Eagles improved to 32-16 while Northeastern moved to 20-16.
Sullivan threw 65 pitches, - 45 strikes - allowing one single and one walk with two strikeouts. His Northeastern counterpart, Matt Cavallaro, scattered five hits in six innings with three strikeouts.
Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 with a double and sacrifice fly. Fellow senior Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.) was 2-for-3, including an RBI single.
Gambino scored the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch after reaching base on Jody Corcoran's error in the first inning. Corcoran made up for the blooper by stroking his team's only hit, a single to left field in the third.
In the second game, BC knotted the score twice before the Huskies plated three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Eagle pitchers yielded five singles in addition to a wild pitch and passed ball in that frame. Mike Stuart (Canton, Mass.) relieved Brendan Nolan (Swampscott, Mass.), who started the game, and caught Shawn Hudon looking to strand three Husky runners and end the inning. Prior to that, Pedro Pena singled through the right side to score Ben Beck for the decisive fifth run.
The Eagles added a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) tripled down the right field line to score Chris Rosado (Stamford, Conn.), who led off the inning with a single. Eric Olson's (Oakland, Calif.) ground out to the shortstop plated Rosado. Then, Cavallaro got Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) and Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.) out to end the threat.
After BC shutdown Northeastern in the top of the seventh, Mike Gambino walked to lead off the top of that stanza. He was promptly thrown out on a 5-6 fielder's choice play. Steve Langone fouled out, then Mike Quirk advanced to second on the pitcher's throwing error. Ben Beck made a sliding catch on Joe Kealty's slicing fly to left field which ended the game at 5-4.
Luke Carlin, Matt Keating, Ben Beck and Hernan Guerrero all had two hits for NU. Chris Rosado led BC hitters with three hits, followed by Brian Durkin's two-hit effort. The Eagles were outhit 12-9.
BC plays three games at Pittsburgh May 13-14. Game time is noon.
