Chestnut Hill, Mass. - - Despite four more hits, Boston College fell 6-5 to host Pittsburgh Sunday in a single game at Trees Field. With the win, Pittsburgh (31-22, 11-13 BIG EAST) clinched the sixth and final seed of the BIG EAST tournament to be held May 17-20 at Somerset Ballpark in Bridgewater, N.J. BC (33-18, 12-11 BIG EAST) earned the fifth seed after a split of yesterday's doubleheader with the Panthers, while also tying a school-record for conference wins (12) in a season.
In the bottom of the 10th, Pittsburgh's Joe Lydic hit the game-winning single off Dave Conley with the bases loaded. The hosts scored three runs on one hit in the ninth as Eagle pitchers hit three batters and walked two while also allowing one hit and a sacrifice fly.
Chris Rosado's (Stamford, Conn.) two-run home run gave BC a 3-0 lead after 3.5 innings. Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) scored on Erik Katchur's error, and Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) smacked an RBI triple in the next inning to hand the Eagles a 5-1 advantage. Pitt answered in the bottom of that inning, thanks to Darrin Lenhart's RBI double off Mike Stuart to close the deficit to three.
Gambino and Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) led all BC sluggers with a combined four hits and two runs scored on the day. Senior co-captain Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.), who was 1-for-1, singled to score Durkin in the third inning.
BC used nine pitchers in the 10-inning game. Dave Conley recorded the loss, his first decision of the year. Jeremy Rossi improved to 2-1, allowing two hits and no runs in 5.1 innings of work.
The Eagles play No. 2 seed, Notre Dame, Wednesday (May 17) in the double-elimination BIG EAST Conference tournament. Game time is 3:30 p.m. Pittsburgh meets the no. 1 seed, Rutgers, at 12 noon on the same day.
