Chestnut Hill, Mass. - - Despite a three-run effort with two home runs in the ninth, Boston College fell to Rutgers 17-12 Sunday in the final game of a three-game conference series at Chestnut Hill. Rutgers improved to 14-10 overall and kept its BIG EAST winning streak in tact (6-0). BC dropped to 12-9 overall and 1-5 in the loop.
The Scarlet Knights registered six runs on seven hits in the eighth inning to break a 9-9 tie. Jake Daubert had a two-run single while teammates Joe Cirone, Mike Popowski, Matt Wolski and Darren Fenster each singled in a run off BC pitcher Mike Stuart (Canton, Mass.), the losing pitcher of the day.
BC rallied in the bottom of the ninth as center fielder Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) powered a 400-foot home run to center field to trim the lead to 17-10 with one out in BC's final at bat. Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.), who was 3-for-4 in the game, then walked to set the stage for Joe Kealty's (Framingham, Mass.) two-run home run to cut the deficit to five. BC then loaded the bases with consecutive singles by Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.), Chris Rosado (Stamford, Conn.) and Eric Olson (Oakland, Calif.) until Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) grounded into a double play to end the game.
The Eagles started the game off hot with six runs in the first inning. Gambino led off with a walk off Jim Wilson and advanced on a wild pitch and error by Matt Wolski which put Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.) on first. Neal McCarthy's single through the left side plated Gambino and Quirk, and Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.), who reached base on a walk, advanced to third on the throw. Mackor singled in Langone and McCarthy, who stole second, for the 4-0 lead. Eric Olson, who along with Mackor was 3-for-5 in the game, homered to left center to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead after one. Ryan Molchan, who then entered in relief of Wilson, allowed singles to Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.) and Gambino before getting Quirk to ground out to end the inning.
BC's starting pitcher, Erik Olson (Reading, Mass.), allowed eight runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work before Jaime Quiros (Jamaca Plain, Mass.) entered in the sixth.
The hosts outhit Rutgers 17-15 while the Scarlet Knights left 11 men stranded on base.
The Eagles have a week off before visiting Villanova for a doubleheader Saturday (April 1), starting at noon and single game Sunday (April 2) at noon.
