Baseball Drops Twice To Rutgers

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College fell twice to BIG EAST Conference foe Rutgers Saturday in a doubleheader at Shea Field in Chestnut Hill. The Scarlet Knights claimed a 7-1 victory in game one then defeated the Eagles 10-2 in the nightcap. Rutgers, picked to win the BIG EAST by coaches in the preseason, improved to 13-10 overall and remain undefeated in the conference after five games. BC dropped to 12-8 and 1-4 in the loop.
RU's Joe Cirrone went 3-for-3 with two home runs to left field to lead all Scarlet Knight batters offensively. Short stop Darren Fenster chipped in a pair of hits. The visiting ace, Bob Brownlie, allowed one run on six hits with six strikeouts in a complete game.
In addition to a 2-for-3 day at the plate, BC pitcher Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) recorded the loss on the mound. Langone surrendered 12 hits for three earned runs with four strikeouts. Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.) and Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) contributed two hits each. Gambino scored BC's lone run when Quirk doubled down the left field line in fifth inning.
Rutgers rang up 17 hits in the second game off pitchers Brendan Nolan (Swampscott, Mass.), the pitcher of record, and Mark Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.). Five different batters, including David DeJesus, Fenster, Jake Daubert, Mike Popowski and Cirone recorded three hits each.
BC second baseman Mike Gambino, who went 4-for-6 on the day, had two hits. Langone, Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.), Eric Olson (Oakland, Calif.) and Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) each contributed a hit.
The two teams play Sunday (March 26) at noon.
