Kingston, R.I. - - Eric Olson (Oakland, Calif.) hit his second and third home runs of the 2000 season to propel Boston College past host Rhode Island (10-8) in a 10-3 decision Wednesday in Kingston.
Olson went 3-for-4 with three RBIs on the day to pace all Eagles. Freshman Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate win on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five in five innings of work.
BC first baseman Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.), who has been hitting .667 in the past three games, went 3-for-4 today. Designated hitter Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) and right fielder Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) chipped in two hits each.
The Eagles flew to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Langone doubled down the left field line to drive in Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.), who received a free pass from Chris Gaffney. Langone advanced on a fly to right field by Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) then came home on Kealty's single.
Olson's homer in the fourth inning drove in Kealty, who singled to start out the inning, which gave BC a 5-2 lead. The senior third baseman led off the eighth with his second dinger. Three batters later, Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) powered his first round-tripper of the season, providing BC a 10-2 advantage.
Junior shortstop Mike LaBarbera paced the Rams with two doubles.
BC hosts Rutgers Saturday (March 25) and Sunday (March 26). Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon.
