Swimming And Diving Squads Defeat Maine

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College women's swimming and diving team captured its fourth consecutive victory, defeating Maine Saturday (Jan. 29) 154-105. The Eagles are currently 5-3-0 overall. With the 145-117 win over the Black Bears, the men's team tagged its third-straight victory to improve to 6-2-0.
Leading the Eagles was Brianne Sullivan (Staten Island, N.Y.) with two individual victories. Sullivan paced the 100-yard freestyle (55.64) and 200 Individual Medley event (2:14.06).
Six other Eagles took home individual event victories. Freshman Nicole Duffy (Chesterfield, Mo.) won the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.72). Her classmate, Caitlin Klick (Chelmsford, Mass.), was victorious in the 200 butterfly, clocking 2:17.23. She was followed by Nicole Fazio (New Canaan, Conn.), who swam 2:19.53 for second. Klick also placed second in the 200 IM (2:14.95). Kate Northrup (Fayetteville, N.Y.) paced the 50-yard free field with her time of 26.18.
Kara Glynn (Branford, Conn.) and Sarah Dreyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished 1-2 in the 500 yard freestyle. Glynn swam 5:18.17 while Dreyer touched the pads just four seconds later at 5:22.87. Christa Ehlers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) earned first place for the Eagles in the 100-yard fly, swimming 1:01.58. Ehlers was also second in the 200 freestyle (1:57.79).
Caroline Griffith (Newport News, Va.) outdistanced all BC swimmers in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.82), finishing second overall. Her teammate, Lauren Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) swam 1:12.15 for second in the 100-yard breaststroke. Backstrokers Kendra Johnson (Weston, Conn.) and Nina Suryoutomo (Fremont, Calif.) each took second swimming the 100- (1:02.45) and 200- (2:12.72) yard events, respectively. Danielle D'Amelio (Hicksville, N.Y.) was third in the 100 back (1:05.40), and Hannah Temple (Chatham, N.J.) placed third in the 200 back (2:15.73). Joanna Myer (Leominster, Mass.) picked up second in the grueling 1000-yard freestyle (10:58.38).
In the men's competition, John Beierle (Rockford, Ill.) picked up a pair of individual victories. The freshman swam 55.53 in the 100-yard fly then finished his 200 IM at 2:05.21 for first, just four events later.
Bob Foley (Scituate, Mass.) won the 200 freestyle, swimming 1:49.77. Breaststrokers Marc Manganiello (Norwich, Vt.) and Ken Barton (Meridien, Conn.) each clinched their respective distances. Manganiello won the 100 with a time of 1:02.86, while Barton clocked 2:15.86 in the 200. Manganiello also placed third in that event (2:18.84) and second in the 200 IM (2:07.63).
Colin Feichtmeir (Mountainview, Calif.) captured a gold in the 50-yard freestyle (22.96). Co-captain Greg Dwyer (Rochelle Park, N.J.) won the 500 freestyle with his time of 4:59.69. Freshman Nick Riolo (San Jose, Calif.) was second in the 1000 free (10:34.87), followed by Fletcher Evans at 10:35.27.
Andy O'Connor (Glendale, Calif.) finished second in the 200 fly at 2:05.05. Matt Baker (Lakewood, Wash.), David Santacroce (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) and Howard Parrington (Jacksonville, Fla.) took 2-3-4 in the 200-yard backstroke. Baker swam 2:05.35, followed by Santacroce (2:09.19) and Parrington (2:10.68).
The women's team travels to Northeastern Thursday (Feb. 3) at 6 p.m. then both teams visit St. John's Saturday (Feb. 5). The meet starts at 4 p.m.
