CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Despite trailing through six events, BC captured victories in six of the next 10 heats to pull out a 165-132 victory over Boston University Wednesday in Chestnut Hill. The Eagles penned their second consecutive win to improve to 5-2 on the season as the night marked the last home meet for the Eagle seniors.
The Terriers led 60-52 before Russ Keil (Tiburon, Calif.), Matt Baker (Lakewood, Wash.) and Colin Feichtmeir (Mountain View, Calif.) finished first, second and fifth in the 50 freestyle to give the Eagles their first lead of the night at 67-64. Keil's time of 22.66 paced all sprinters, followed by Baker (22.92) and Feichtmeir (23.14).
Mike Wilt (Columbia, Conn.) then turned in one of a pair of stellar diving performances on the night, totaling 267.10 to win the one-meter event. Steven Hunter (Chester, N.Y.) was third with 199.05 points in that event. Wilt went on to take second on the three-meter board, gaining 267.25 points with Hunter in third at 185.20.
Keil, Baker, and Feichtmeir tagged first, second and fourth in the 100 freestyle. Keil swam 49.55 while Baker clocked 49.91 and Feichtmeir finished at 51.14.
Greg Dwyer (Rochelle Park, N.J.) made up 1.3 seconds in the final leg to win the 200 backstroke event with a time of 2:01.12. Paul Callahan (Churchville, Penn.) was third in that event, swimming 2:05.85.
The BC breaststroke trio then pulled off its second sweep of the meet in their second consecutive meet. Ken Barton (Meridien, Conn.) paced the 200 breaststroke field, swimming 2:14.95. Brian O'Neill (Reno, Nev.) was second at 2:15.55, and Marc Manganiello (Norwich, Vt.) placed third (2:17.36). Earlier in the meet, the three Eagle swimmers finished 1-2-3 in the 100 breaststroke. Barton won with a time of 1:00.84, followed by O'Neill (1:03.60) and Manganiello (1:03.62). Both O'Neill and Manganiello passed BU's Jason Walker on the final lap for the sweep.
Freshman John Beierle (Rockford, Ill.) placed third in the 100 butterfly (54.80), after turning in a silver medal effort for the 200 fly (2:01.28) in event six.
In the meet's second to last event, Dwyer surmounted a huge lead in the Individual Medley after only the butterfly leg en route to an event-winning time of 2:02.39. Callahan finished second at 2:04.40, and teammate Brian O'Neill was third at 2:06.70. That sweep clinched a 159-121 BC advantage and marked the first time this semester that BC's meet was not decided in the final relay.
Dwyer had also finished second in the meet's fourth event, the 100 backstroke (56.58). Earlier in the meet, Bob Foley (Scituate, Mass.) was second in the grueling 1000 freestyle (10:32.90).
