CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - The Boston College women's swimming and diving team (3-3) captured victories in 11 of 16 events to defeat Rhode Island 187-113 Saturday. The men's team (4-2) fared equally as well, coming from behind to overtake the Rams 154-136.
The women swept both the middle and long distance freestyle events. Sarah Dreyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) paced the 1000-yard freestyle field with her time of 10:55.82. Melissa Pierce (The Woodlands, Texas) and Joanna Myer (Leominster, Mass.) finished second (11:02.04) and third (11:04.50), respectively. Kara Glynn (Branford, Conn.) finished ahead of her two Eagle teammates in the 500 free, clocking a time of 5:17.14. Dreyer finished second (5:19.15), and Lauren Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) was third (5:23.04) in the same event. Schwartz also won the 200 freestyle (2:00.68).
Other individual event winners for BC included Nina Suryoutomo (Fremont, Calif.) in the 100 backstroke (1:00.33). Nicole Duffy (Chesterfield, Mo.) earned the team's outstanding performance with her 2:11.85 time in the 200 butterfly. Shannon Lents (Boca Raton, Fla.) was first in the one-meter diving competition (236.17) then finished second in the three-meter (244.65).
In addition to her 1000-yard effort, Pierce won the 200 back (2:10.22), finishing three seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. Her classmate, Christa Ehlers (Bay Shore, N.Y.), clocked a 1:01.04 to win the 100 fly. Alexis Kostopoulos (Marblehead, Mass.) was victorious in the 200 individual medley, and teammate Nicole Duffy landed second (2:13.53). Kostopoulos also placed second in the 100 free (55.26).
After trailing most of the way, the men tied the meet at 73 on the strength of a 1-2-3 sweep in the one-meter diving, halfway through. Two events later, URI took a 10-point lead (97-87) that was quickly reversed into a 103-100 BC advantage after Ken Barton led a BC sweep of the 200 breaststroke. URI's next lead at 112-110 would be its last, as the Eagles won three of the next four events including the crucial final relay to win by 18.
The Eagle unit of Matt Baker (Lakewood, Wash.), Fletcher Evans (Mercer Island, Wash.), Colin Feichtmeir (Mountain View, Calif.) and Russell Keil (Tiburon, Calif.) swam 3:16.64, finishing nearly three seconds ahead of second-place URI to win the 400-freestyle relay event and clinch the victory.
The breaststroke trio of Ken Barton (Meridien, Conn.), Marc Manganiello (Norwich, Vt.) and Brian O'Neill (Reno, Nev.) swept both the 100- and 200-yard distances. Barton swam 1:00.28 in the 100, followed by second-place Manganiello at 1:03.08 and bronze medalist Brian O'Neill with a time of 1:03.49. Barton's 200 breaststroke effort of 2:13.65 was good enough for the win. O'Neill and Manganiello finished second (2:17.14) and third (2:18.86), respectively.
Matthias Schildwachter's (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) 100 butterfly win late in the meet gave BC the lead for good at 123-118. He earned the team's most outstanding performance for that effort. John Beierle (Rockford, Ill.) placed third in that event.
Divers Mike Wilt (Columbia, Conn.) and Steven Hunter (Chester, N.Y.) racked up two, 1-2 finishes over the meet. Wilt won the one-meter (243.52) followed by Hunter's 159.52 effort. The junior also totaled 209.17 in the three-meter, while Hunter accumulated 181.20 in the same event.
The BC women face host Boston University Tuesday (Jan. 25) with the meet starting at 7 p.m. The Terrier men visit BC the following day. The meet begins at 7 p.m.
