Hand Makes History as ACC Player of the Week
December 30, 2024 | Men's Basketball
Sophomore guard had double-double (29p/10r) last week; becomes part of first-ever father-son duo to earn weekly honors from the ACC
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- After a career-high 29-point double-double performance on Dec. 28, Donald Hand Jr. has been named the ACC Men's Basketball Player of the Week. The award was announced this afternoon by the league office.
This marks the first time in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference that a father and son have each been named ACC Player of the Week. Donald Hand Sr. won the ACC top weekly player award on Jan. 31, 2000 while starring at Virginia. The conference began its weekly awards program during the 1972-73 season.
The sophomore guard poured in a career-high 29 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in a victory over FDU this past Saturday. Hand poured in 15 of his 29 points in the first half and scored eight of BC's final 10 points down the stretch in the win. One of the top free throw shooters in the country, Hand connected on all nine of his trips to the charity stripe against the Knights. It marked his third game with at least 22 points this season and marked his fourth double-double in points and rebounds so far in 2024-25.
For the season, Hand leads BC and ranks 15th in the league in scoring, at 15.3 points per game. His 7.5 rebounds per game rank eighth in the ACC, making him one of only three players to rank among the top 15 in scoring and rebounding in the league. His four double-doubles on the season rank fourth overall in the ACC and, among all guards nationally, ties him for ninth in the country.
It is the first weekly conference award for Boston College this season and it marks BC's first ACC Player of the Week since Quinten Post was selected on Nov. 20, 2023. Since BC joined the ACC prior to the 2005-06 season, an Eagle has been selected ACC Player of the Week on 18 occasions, with 10 different players have captured the award at least once.
