AUBURN, Ala. - Florida Atlantic's Mike Gipson allowed six hits and two runs in seven innings of work to lead the Owls to a 13-2 win against the Boston College baseball team Saturday at Auburn's Plainsman Park.
Gipson struck out four and walked one in his outing.
FAU had a pair of big innings that accounted for the 13 runs. It scored seven times in the top of the second and five in the fifth. Raymond Church had a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs. Joey Burkhalter went 2-for-2 and Andy Mee and Anthony Mesa both drove in three runs.
The loss marks the first time that BC has lost three-straight regular season games since the series at NC State from April 25-27, 2008.
Senior Robbie Anston went 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot with a double and he scored both of BC's runs. Junior Mickey Wiswall and sophomore Anthony Melchionda were the ones to drive him in.
The Eagles posted a run in the first inning once again - the fourth time in five games - to take the early advantage. Anston doubled to the gap in right to start the frame and then sophomore Matt Hamlet moved him 90 feet with a sacrifice. Wiswall continued his timely hitting with an RBI single on a 3-1 offering.
Florida Atlantic responded with seven runs in the top of the second thanks to four doubles. Dan Scheffler drew a leadoff walk and then Nick Delguidice pulled the first pitch he saw down the line in left for a double. Mark Nelson followed suit with a two-bagger off the wall in left to clear the bases and give the Owls a 2-1 lead. Church stepped to the plate and drove the first pitch he saw up the middle for an RBI single and a two-run FAU lead.
Mesa and Mike Albaladejo both walked to load the bases with one out. Sophomore Mike Dennhardt got Colby Gratton swinging for the second out but fell behind 3-1 on Mee and he cleared the bases with a double to the gap in right to make it 6-1. Scheffler capped the scoring with an RBI double after getting ahead 3-0 in the count.
BC got a run back in the third inning to make it 7-2. Freshman Anthony Italiano was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Anston singled up the middle. Wiswall walked with one out to load the bases and then Melchionda brought home a run with a single to right. That is all BC would get though as a pair of pop outs left the bases loaded.
FAU put up five more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 12-2 lead. Scheffler led off with a walk and after a strikeout, Nelson singled and Church walked to load the bases. Chase Vergason chopped a grounder to first that was mishandled, allowing a run to score. Mesa then hit a bases-clearing triple to put the Owls up 11-2. Albaladejo flew out to center field to get the final run of the inning home.
Burkhalter added an RBI double in the top of the eighth to cap the scoring.
BC finishes its weekend in Auburn on Sunday when it faces Missouri at 11 a.m. CT.
