Softball Goes Undefeated In Maryland Invitational

College Park, Md. - The Boston College softball team collected two more victories on the final day of the Maryland Invitational at Terrapin Complex in College Park, Md. The Eagles topped host Maryland-Eastern Shore, 9-0 in five innings, in the first game. They topped Brown, 9-7, in a slugfest in the twin bill. BC improves to 16-9 on the season and is riding a seven-game win streak.
In the first game, BC pushed three runs across in the third inning and six in the fourth inning for the mercy-rule victory. The Eagles drew first blood with two outs in the third inning as Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) started the rally with a single. After a Jenna Macchi (Milton, Mass.) walk, Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) delivered a double that scored both Goodchild and Macchi. Ferrero then scored on an error.
In the next inning, BC added six more runs. Ferrero once again came up big, belting a double that scored two runs. Freshman pitcher Colleen Reiche (Tucson, Ariz.) also belted a two-RBI double. Elyse Meredith (Basking Ridge, N.J.) smacked a third double, pushing across a single run. Reiche also posted the win in the circle, collecting 10 strikeouts while allowing just two walks and four hits in five innings. Goodchild and Ferrero both finished with 2-3 performances as Ferrero collected four RBI.
In the second game, BC pounded out 15 hits. Five different Eagles put forth multiple-hit games with Goodchild and Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) each collecting three hits. BC posted a single run in the first inning and scored seven of its nine runs (on seven hits) in the fourth and fifth innings. Goodchild and Mackey each collected two RBI. Thompson posted the win on the mound, going 6.1 innings while striking out six.
BC is scheduled to open its home schedule with a BIG EAST doubleheader against Virginia Tech (12:00 p.m.) on March 27. The Eagles will host Boston University on March 28 (1:00 p.m.).
