CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Redshirt freshman quarterback Brian St. Pierre (Danvers, Mass.) completed 14 of 22 passes for 154 passes in Boston College's final preseason football scrimmage Thursday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. St. Pierre connected with junior wide receiver Steve Dapra (Oakmont, Pa.) for the only touchdown, a seven-yarder, in the 97-play scrimmage. Junior quarterback Tim Hasselbeck (Norfolk, Mass.) was 6-14 for 58 yards on the day.
Freshman running back William Green (Atlantic City, N.J.) gained 121 yards on 14 carries, including a 32-yard run. Junior Cedric Washington (Holyoke, Mass.) carried nine times for 34 yards on the day, while another freshman, Derrick Knight (Westwood, Mass.), carried seven times for 28 yards.
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Jamal Burke (Brockton, Mass.) led the way with five catches for 46 yards, including a long of 16. Senior tight end Bryan Arndt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) caught the ball twice for 40 yards, including a 28-yard reception.
Young players had a banner day on defense, too, as redshirt freshman defensive back Marco Williams (Tampa, Fla.) racked up a sack and an interception and freshman DB Willie Poole (St. Albans, N.Y.) snagged two interceptions.
"Right now we're a tired football team," Head Coach Tom O'Brien said. "We need to get regrouped. After 21 practices playing against each other, it's time for us to change our focus, to start to prepare to play Baylor."
O'Brien also announced that he has awarded one of BC's available scholarships to walk-on defensive back Kevin Costello (Topsfield, Mass.). The 5-9, 180-pound junior joined the team as a walk-on in January 1997 and saw playing time in the 1998 season.
