One of the most talented defenders ever to wear the Eagles' Maroon and Gold, he was a four-year starter at linebacker and won a host of All-East, All-ECAC and All-America accolades during his dazzling college football career.
As a freshman, he won a starting role in the lineup of BC's storied 1984 Lambert Trophy and Cotton Bowl Championship team, topping his rookie year by his selection as "Defensive MVP" of BC's post-season victory in Dallas. As a junior, he helped the Eagles defeat Georgia in the Hall of Fame Bowl.
In his senior season, a record 156 tackles (101 solo) earned him the George "Bulger" Lowe Award as New England's top college football player. He also was a recipient of the Thomas F. Scanlan Memorial Award as BC's top football scholar-athlete and played in the East-West Shrine Game at the conclusion of the season.
After graduation, he played 16 years in the National Football League, competing in an NFL record 243 consecutive games at linebacker, and was a member of four Super Bowl championship teams (San Francisco 49ers, 1989, 1990; Denver Broncos, 1998, 1999). He twice received NFL "All-Pro" honors.
Inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
