Eagles duo sweeps the conference awards after record-setting performances in the BC's 3-0-0 week
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A pair of Boston College women's hockey players earned three Hockey East weekly awards on Monday, capping a record-setting week for the duo.
Freshman forward Daryl Watts was tabbed both the Warrior Player of the Week and the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week after leading all Division I players nationally in points last week and setting two more Hockey East records. Senior goalkeeper Katie Burt earned the league's Defensive Player of the Week award after a standout week in goal and closing her record-setting conference career.
In three games last week, Boston College went a perfect 3-0-0 and finishing the season atop the conference standings. On Tuesday, the Eagles won the 2018 Women's Beanpot with a 4-3 win over Boston University in overtime before sweeping a two-game road series at No. 10 Maine on Friday and Saturday.
Watts posted seven points (three goals, four assists) in three games last week, including a pair of three-point efforts. On Tuesday in the Beanpot championship game, she scored two goals – including the game-tying goal with less than four minutes left in regulation to send the game to overtime – and added an assist in the win to keep the Beanpot at The Heights for the third straight year as she was voted the Beanpot Most Valuable Player. On Friday at the 10th-ranked Black Bears, she posted another three-point day, scoring a goal and adding two assists in the 5-0 victory. The following day, Watts set up Caitrin Lonergan's game-winning goal in the second period in the 3-1 win.
With her four-point weekend in league play, Watts tied the Hockey East single-season scoring record with 55 points this season. Her goal on Friday was also her 30th in league play this season, tying the Hockey East single-season goals record, as well. She matched former Northeastern forward Kendall Coyne's records in both categories, which were set during the 2015-16 season.
Watts continues to lead the nation in many offensive categories, including points (79), goals (40), points per game (2.32), power-play goals (9), power-play assists (13) and power-play points (22). She has the nation's second-highest marks in assists (39), goals per game (1.18), assists per game (1.15), shorthanded goals (3), plus/minus (+46), shots on goal (197) and shots per game (5.79).
Burt stood tall in goal all week for the Eagles, claiming three wins with a 1.23 goals against average and a .960 save percentage from 95 saves. Burt shared the defensive honor with Providence goaltender Madison Myers, who posted a shutout of Northeastern in her only action this week.
On Tuesday in the Beanpot Championship, Burt made 35 saves against BU, including turning away three one-on-one breakaways in the first 22 minutes of the game. After Watts tied the game late in the third, Burt stopped eight shots in overtime to help back the Eagles to the championship. For her stellar play, she was voted the winner of the Bertagna Award as the tournament's top goaltender.
On Friday, Burt made 30 saves in the 5-0 shutout at Maine, including 12 in the third period to preserve the clean sheet. Saturday, she again stopped 30 shots in the second game in Orono with another 12 saves in the third period to prevent the Black Bears' comeback effort.
With her efforts this weekend, Burt closed her Hockey East conference career holding almost every career goaltending record including wins (70), goals against average (1.39), shutouts (24) and minutes played (4880:40). She finished her career tied for second in save percentage (.938) and ninth in saves (1714).
This week's player and rookie honors are Watts' eighth and ninth weekly honors from Hockey East this season. She is a two-time player of the week and a seven-time rookie of the week. For Burt, it's her third weekly award this season to go with her two player of the week awards earlier this season. Overall, she has now earned 17 conference weekly honors in her four years at The Heights.
